‘In Kirundi, the language spoken in Burundi, Icirori means: to look into your inner mirror, to look at your inner suffering so that you can live with it.

In my quest for identity, I invite us to think,
to listen, to hear our history differently.
To shift our gaze,
to make us, the invisibilized, the subject.
I am an adopted adult.
Today, I have decided to return to Burundi.
To discover
the bodies, the smells, the lights,
the traumas in my memory.
To heal.

In this chapter, ICIRORI, I will share this new memory born from my return after twenty-eight years. An immersive performance in a changing, hybrid format that invites human sharing, towards an us.’

Drawing on the need to delve into her own history as an illegally adopted child, Consolate takes us to the heart of her world using sounds, smells and images. She shares her memories in order to question our sensory memory and makes us see and hear similar life stories — documents that immerse us in issues related to transnational adoption and postcolonial questions.

ICIRORI, a hybrid performance that is constantly evolving, invites sharing and allows us to live a collective experience of the self.
