« On January 16, 2020, I received a message: « Hello, I'm your big sister ». It was then that I understood that my story was not the one I had been told.
So I began to research child trafficking between Burundi and Belgium from 1993 to 1998 and became aware of the extent of the situation and the fact that I was not an isolated case. This was confirmed when I met the investigative reporter Alain Lallemand, who covered these subjects in the 1990s, and who explained to me all the ins and outs of the trafficking I had been subjected to.
I then decided to imagine, with my artistic team, an exhibition space that questions transnational adoption, the uprooting of identity and the collective history that binds our territories, where the intimate and the political are mixed. A journey of video clips, archival documents, photos, and writings, brought to life by inclusive or self-segregated conversations that remind us that the exhibition ‘walks’ in the footsteps of visitors. It is a place to share in order to raise awareness, to create in order to bring people together, to tell stories in order to repair. Un retour to Burundi, possibly. »
