Un acte d’une violence indicible

Matthias Bruggmann

07.01 > 22.02.2020
Exhibition

Observing reality and repor-ting on it is no longer enough. One must question what one sees. The photographs by Matthias Bruggmann (Elysée Prize 2016-2018) seem to tell us something about war. Their captions force us to look closer, not to stay with a first superficial, pre-formatted interpretation. They try to put these photographic moments in an often unsettling, much wider context. That’s what this is about, the vertigo one needs to feel to be conscious of the chaos which sur-rounds us. More than a window on the world, it’s the way we see it that is involved here.

An Act of Unspeakable Violence saw the light of day as part of the Prix Elysée. The result of an exclusive partnership between the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne and Parmigiani Fleurier, the prize offers the winner financial help as well as curatorial guidance to create an original photography project and to publish the book about the project by Éditions Xavier Barral. The entire exhibition was on view at the Musée de l’Elysée from October 17th 2018 to January 27th 2019.
