Les Aveugles

Maurice Maeterlinck, Josse De Pauw, Jan Kuijken, Collegium Vocale Gent

13 > 17.11.2019
Musical show

A group of blind people wander through an ancient forest on an island. They are waiting for the return of the priest who brought them here, not realizing that he is already among them. Silent. Dead?

Les Aveugles is the third element of Josse De Pauw’s trilogy dedicated to the exploration of the human condition. Working with a different composer for each of his shows, he worked with Dominique Pauwels for Les Héros and with Kris Defoort for L’Humanité (presented in the 18/19 season). For this last element, it is with Jan Kuijken that he is collaborating. The duo has taken Maurice Maeterlinck’s poignant prose drama written in 1890, which they have complemented with new texts in English. The resulting text is sung by the wonderful singers of Collegium Vocale Ghent , men and women whose a cappella singing rises and melds to translate the symbolism of the wandering and the blindness of a group of human beings who resemble us.
