Black Clouds
Fabrice Murgia / Cie Artara
On stage, two Senegalese and two Belgian actors want to tell us this modern-day tale in which they unwittingly
appear as characters. Their fates and their stories intersect.
Black Clouds tells of the scams organised by cybercriminals from the Ivory Coast, the “brouteurs” (grazers) or web scammers who enter into virtual romantic relationships with Westerners or who cunningly swindle money all over the world from their bases on the African continent. The Internet becomes a meeting place for people in distress and a forum for manipulation.
The production also deals with sex tourism, that recolonisation of the body, and with the North-South digital divide. It explores the ambivalent nature of that virtually unmonitored, secret tool (the deep web, the darknet) that is, at one and the same time, a vehicle for emancipation and enslavement, for information that brings freedom and domination through propaganda or brainwashing.
