Kirina
Serge Aimé Coulibaly, Rokia Traoré / Faso Danse Théâtre, Ruhrtriennale
Following on the success of his previous spectacle Kalakuta Republik – which was a homage to Fela Kuti – Serge Aimé Coulibaly was inspired this time by one of the foundational battles of West Africa: Kirina is a contemporary epic drawing on history and fiction. On stage we have nine dancers, six musicians, one storyteller, and forty extras bringing to life the story of a people filled with hope and rebellion marching towards their future.
With a book by author and economist Felwine Sarr and music from legendary singer Rokia Traoré, Serge Aimé Coulibaly deploys a choreographic vocabulary based on interior violence and fragility. At the juncture of the great Greek tragedies and the Biblical and African myths, Kirina is a theatre of battles, cathartic celebrations, sacrifices and unions.
In this great fresco where dance is a march forward and that march is transformation, is an ageless story both symbolic and pagan, which evokes the need for migration.
