Her shows are always scores for large groups and energetically bring out the power of the collective. Bodies form masses, gather in monuments, cluster together in sweat and voluptuousness, unite before separating with a bang. Her ritual-like choreographies draw in lost souls to lead them towards the beyond and towards the sacred in sudden, irresistible trances. Between organic excess and collective rebellion.

Together with her Brazilian performers who often come from the favelas, Lia Rodrigues has been working since the early 2000s in her own studio in Rio de Janeiro. It is here that she invents art that is strongly influenced by local textures. Her work reflects as much Brazil’s colonial heritage as today’s social inequalities and ecological concerns about a damaged environment. 

Fabrics, plastics and liquids often form her only backdrop: a ballet between bodies and matter that only she knows the secret of. And all this in a plethora of colours and without worrying about getting dirty. Création 2025, whose outline as yet remains secret, is sure to take us into a singular universe.
