Theatre – Cabaret

One of them, a rounded man, has settled on a cardboard box in the middle of the stage – a box he won’t move from throughout the performance. In made-up English, he recounts the incredible tale of a man – his ancestor? – who was cursed centuries ago by a mermaid in a fjord on the Faroe Islands. The other, sickly and wearing swimming trunks, demonstrates awe-inspiring inventiveness – beside, around, above – to illustrate the stages of this anti-hero’s incredible journey through time and Europe. The box becomes a bicycle, a motorbike, an aeroplane; the actors draw on the comic impulse of slapstick, mime and clowning. Evolving in a make-shift set, the unlikely pair lead the audience into a fable that is at once tender and burlesque, a tribute to artisanal theatre. Inherently popular and playful, their cardboard cabaret reveals the strength and magic of this ephemeral art form as well as its poetic delicacy.
