Carmen.
François Gremaud
Rosemary Standley
François Gremaud has undertaken to revisit three great tragic female figures of the classical performing arts: Phèdre (theatre), Giselle (ballet) and Carmen (opera). Carmen, one of the most famous opéras comiques, is about a rebellious and seductive young bohemian woman who is tragically murdered by her former lover.
In keeping with his unique way of turning a lesson into an art form, the author/director offers us a ‘reduction’ of Bizet’s work, tailor-made for a single performer: Rosemary Standley, the singer of the group Moriarty, among others. On stage she will share with us not only the story of Carmen, but also the musical and textual aesthetics of this opera, the historical context of its creation.
Despite the tragic outcome of the story, there will be joy and wonder. These are emotions that the performing arts can release, arts which, against all odds, never cease to celebrate the profound happiness of being in the world.
