El Baile
Mathilde Monnier & Alan Pauls
Choreographer, Mathilde Monnier, who runs the Centre National de la Danse in Pantin in the suburbs of Paris, wanted to transfer the historical subject of the original play to the Argentina of today, setting the action in a Buenos Aires “milonga”, a popular dance hall where tango reigns supreme.
To gain a better understanding of the recent history of this country and its effect on the daily lives of its inhabitants, and to provide a clearer insight into the amnesia and the unmentionable secrets still surrounding the dictatorship and the lists of the disappeared, she invited the collaboration of writer, Alan Pauls, author of the trilogy A History of Weeping, A History of Hair and A History of Money.
However, the sole form of expression is physical, through the bodies of the dancers, whose personal stories are interpreted in the manner of the great ensemble creations of Pina Bausch, conjuring up History with a capital H from these anecdotal tales of desire, relationships, and strategies of seduction.
