Dance – Troika

For Serge Aimé Coulibaly, Burkinabe choreographer located in Brussels, dance is a social commitment Through a powerful and universal language he questions the world and shares his reflections with an international audience. If his inspiration is rooted in Africa, his influences are many. Additionally, each creative episode takes place in Africa as well as in Europe.

Contemporary and anchored in emotion, Serge Aimé Coulibaly’s dancing is always hopeful. It’s through this prism that he touches on complex themes which he fills with positive energy.

After having investigated a popular uprising (Nuit Blanche à Ouagadougou), after having explored what a commitment for a better world requires from the individual (Kalakuta Republik), after having scrutinized our disdainful gaze on the history of migratory peoples through a few West African origin myths (Kirina) WAKATT questions the “fear of the other” that is so prevalent in the present day.

In this project Serge Aimé Coulibaly wonders about the nature of humankind, his “natural instinct.” Are we violent by default? Do we spontaneously reject those who we do not know? Or it is just manipulation of the masses that we can counter?

At a time when walls are being built between different peoples, when nationalisms thrive on the rejection of the other, Wakatt incites to resistance and openness  towards a common and generous future.
